Fantasy-making methods and functional actions in the story collection "Sorena in the Land of Dinosaurs" by Elham Mazarei

Abstract

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study aims to examine the techniques of fantasy‑making and functional actions in the five‑volume series Sorena dar Sarzamin-e Dinosorha by Elham Mazar’i. The significance of the topic lies in the fact that fantasy, as one of the functional genres in children’s and young adult literature, plays an important role in responding to the mental needs of its audience.

METHODOLOGY: The research method is based on qualitative–textual analysis. First, the theoretical foundations of fantasy and imagination in children’s and young adult literature are reviewed; then, the text of the selected series is examined analytically. The focus is placed on techniques of fantasy‑making, types of imagination, and functional narrative actions.

FINDINGS: The findings indicate that the author, by employing various possibilities of fantasy—such as escape from time and space, characterization, thematic construction, modes of entry into the fantasy world, and different forms of imagination—has succeeded in creating a narrative space rich in imagination and surprise. Innovation in language and creative word‑formation, the use of symbols and mythological motifs, and the incorporation of intertextual references are among the strengths of the series.

CONCLUSION: Sorena dar Sarzamin-e Dinosorha is a novel within the field of children’s and young adult literature that, in addition to utilizing common fantasy‑making techniques, introduces a fresh approach to the formation of fantasy through linguistic and narrative innovation, making it a noteworthy work.
